What Is GMAX Testing? A Practical Guide for Athletic Directors

A plain-English overview of field impact attenuation, what testing can tell you, what it cannot tell you, and how results fit into maintenance planning.

What GMAX measures

GMAX is a measure used to describe impact attenuation—how a surface responds to an impact under a standardized field test. ASTM F1936 establishes an in-situ test method and performance requirement for turf playing systems.

What a test can tell you

Testing can identify areas with elevated impact-attenuation values and provide objective data that can be compared with applicable requirements, owner criteria and prior results.

What it cannot tell you

A passing result does not mean an injury cannot occur, and the number does not replace inspection of infill, seams, wear zones, drainage or other field conditions.

When facilities teams usually request it

GMAX testing is commonly considered when an owner has a testing requirement, wants an objective baseline, is investigating field hardness concerns, is evaluating maintenance effectiveness or is building a longer-term field-management record. The exact trigger should come from the owner’s standard, specification, risk-management program, manufacturer guidance or qualified consultant—not from a marketing claim that every field needs the same test on the same schedule.

Testing and maintenance should remain distinct

A maintenance contractor can use test results to guide corrective work, but standardized testing should be performed by a provider with the equipment, calibration, procedure and qualifications required by the applicable scope. When independence is important to the owner, keeping the testing provider separate from the contractor performing corrective maintenance can also improve confidence in the result.

What to keep in the field file

Retain the full report, test date, field identification, test locations, applicable method, provider information, weather or surface notes required by the report, prior results if available and any maintenance performed afterward. That history is far more useful than a screenshot of one number without context.

How testing works conceptually

A qualified provider uses calibrated test equipment and the method required by the applicable scope. The device applies a controlled impact at documented field locations and records the surface response. Method, equipment, conditions and reporting requirements matter; an informal hardness impression is not standardized testing.

Why multiple locations are tested

Use and maintenance are not uniform. Infill can migrate, compact or become contaminated differently at midfield, goal areas, hash zones or sidelines. Multiple documented locations show variation that one convenient spot could miss.
