Synthetic Turf Grooming vs. Decompaction

The difference between routine grooming and deeper infill decompaction, plus when each may be appropriate.

Grooming

Grooming is generally aimed at lifting fibers, redistributing infill and improving surface consistency using equipment appropriate to the system.

Decompaction

Decompaction works deeper into compacted infill to restore mobility and resilience where needed. It is a more condition-driven maintenance activity.

Why the distinction matters

Calling every pass with a brush “decompaction” can misstate the work. Scope language should describe the equipment, depth and objective clearly.

When both may be used

A maintenance visit may combine surface grooming with deeper decompaction, followed by infill redistribution and final field inspection.

What grooming is trying to accomplish

Routine grooming generally focuses on the upper part of the system: lifting fibers, moving surface infill and improving consistency. The equipment and pass pattern should be appropriate to the field and should avoid dragging or stressing seams and inlays.

What decompaction is trying to accomplish

Decompaction addresses infill that has packed more tightly and lost mobility. Depending on the machine and field system, tines or other mechanisms work deeper than a surface brush. Because the intervention is more aggressive, the operator should know the field construction and avoid using a generic depth setting across every surface.

How to write the scope clearly

Ask the vendor to distinguish brushing/grooming from decompaction and to identify the machine or method, intended depth/objective, number or direction of passes where relevant, final grooming and documentation. Clear scope language makes bid comparisons more meaningful.
